The Political Mind by George Lakoff
Sunday Oct 26, 2014
Sunday Oct 26, 2014
As progressive politicians and activists persist in believing that people use an objective system of reasoning to decide on their politics, the Democrats will continue to lose elections. They must wrest control of the terms of the debate from their opponents rather than accepting their frame and trying to argue within it. This passionate, erudite, and groundbreaking book will appeal to readers of Steven Pinker and Thomas Frank. It is a fascinating read for anyone interested in how the mind works, how society works, and how they work together.

Saturday Oct 11, 2014
Yale Law School professors Chua (the Tiger Mom herself) and husband Rubenfeld argue that the triumph of certain cultural groups in America--e.g., Mormons in business and the highly paid Chinese Americans and Jews--results from three principles: members of such groups believe the group is exceptional, still feel they must prove themselves, and work for future goals instead of immediate satisfaction.

Sunday Sep 28, 2014
Sunday Sep 28, 2014
You should be proud of me: I'm reviewing a book that specifically criticizes my own belief system. Christians rejoice! This book is a critique of the New Atheist movement. The author posits that this new form of atheism which seeks to stamp out all people of faith is not only insulting to the religious, but could have serious and dangerous implications. Listen to my review, and tell me if you think I was able to be objective about a point of view that runs completely counter to my own. You be the judge.

Saturday Aug 02, 2014
In this book review I discuss Ha Joon Chang's work on the idea of free trade. Disclaimer: I've only read a handful of economics books in my life, so take my review with a grain of salt. His argument: Free trade for all countries is not only not helpful, but actually may keep poor countries permanently impoverished. Listen to the review to decide for yourself.
